Safe in the Arms of Jesus, the Master Engineer…

safe_in_the_arms_of_jesusThen he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”

–Zechariah 3:1-2

Talmage once tells of a story of an engineer on a locomotive going across the Western prairie. Day after day the engineer saw a little girl come out in front of a cabin and wave to him; so he got in the habit of waving back to the little child, and it was the day’s joy to him to see this little one come out in front of her cabin-door and wave to him while he answered back.

buster-keaton-general_lOne day the train was delayed, and it came on to the dusk of the evening. As the engineer stood at his post he saw by the headlight that little girl on the track, wondering why the train did not come, looking for the train. She knew nothing of her peril.  A great horror seized upon the engineer. He reversed the engine. He gave it in charge of the other man, and then he climbed over the engine, and he came down on the cowcatcher.

He said, though he had reversed the engine, it seemed as though it were going at lighting speed, faster and faster, though it was really slowing up; and with almost supernatural clutch he caught the child by the hair and lifted her up; when the train stopped, and the passengers gathered around to see what was the matter; there was the old engineer, fainted dead away, and the little child alive and in his brawny arms. “

Does not that represent us? Wandering on the track of sin, Satan claims us as his own. But then Jesus comes. And down to earth he is brought, as a baby, risking heaven, sacrificing his own life for our sakes, and plucking us up from our own certain eternal death, when we were as good as already dead.  As the Puritan, Richard Baxter put it, “without Christ, we are on the threshold of Hell without even the first step.”

And just like the little girl in the Engineer’s arms, as Christians, we are also alive and well in our Savior’s arms.  Do you know the Savior?  Has the Lord rebuked Satan for You?
